Building Career Confidence and Impact

Senior Female Leader — Rosie Ranganathan

Client:

A female leader in a Premiership Football club.

Challenge:

To help secure a bigger role within the high performance side of the club.

The leader didn’t value their client’s experience and was struggling to tell their story with confidence and impact. They were unsure how to tell their story impactfully so that others would listen. They had great ideas but hadn’t found their voice to push themselves forward.

The Solution

Executive Coaching with Rosie Ranganathan

The coaching focused on mapping their career, identifying their strengths, and recognising the skills and experiences that would transfer into a high-performance environment. They also practised telling their story with confidence and impact.

1. Career Timeline

The initial sessions focused on mapping their career timeline and identifying their achievements. The key was to help them recognise parts of their experience they had written off by assuming they would not be valued in a high-performance environment. Through coaching, they reframed these experiences and identified the transferable skills and strengths they brought.

2. Telling Their Story

The career timeline enabled them to tell their story in a more engaging and compelling way. By reframing their experiences, they were able to communicate their story with confidence and gravitas, allowing them to perform more effectively under pressure during interviews.

3. Increasing Confidence, Self-belief and Finding Their Voice

Mapping their career and articulating their story gave them greater confidence and self-belief. They recognised and owned their expertise and the value it brought to discussions. Together, they identified situations where they felt less able to speak up (for example, because of hierarchy or a lack of diversity) and explored strategies to overcome these barriers. They identified opportunities to put themselves forward for projects and contribute more actively in meetings, gradually becoming more confident in leaning in.

4. Career Planning

This work enabled them to become much more focused on their career goals. They identified the actions they needed to take and the people who could support their development. The final phase focused on creating a clear plan to progress towards opportunities within the high-performance side of the organisation.

Impact & Results

  • A promotion to head up Academy Operations, thus retaining talent for the organisation and internal promotion.
  • A greater clarity of their career direction meaning they were able to approach a mentor within the business (COO). This led to a year’s secondment as Technical Assistant to the Group COO. This elevated their profile within the business, both UK and internationally.
  • Their renewed self-belief allowed them to participate more in meetings in an assertive manner, without feeling apologetic. They realised that they had a unique perspective, that their experience was equally valued and brought a difference to the discussions.
